Chennai: As per the guidelines of the Madras High Court, Corporation Commissioner D Karthikeyan today inspected the shops and clean-up drive undertaken by Corporation workers at Marina beach.
Explaining the importance of the clean-up drive to the officials of various departments, the Commissioner warned of strict action against those who don’t follow the instructions.
The Commissioner inspected the toilets on the beach. After checking out Pattinapakkam Loop Road, which will soon be restored at an estimated cost of Rs 47 crore, he asked the officials to clear sewage stagnation. He also turned his eyes towards 300-odd shop fish market being built nearby on two acres.
The High Court, 7 December, gave 10 days for the Commissioner to submit a comprehensive action plan to clean up Marina beach. Persisting with its attempt to ensure that the beach is cleaned, a division bench of Justice Vineet Kothari and Anitha Sumanth directed the Commissioner to remove encroachments along Loop Road.
On Monday, Commissioner Karthikeyan, who appeared in person before the bench, as directed by the judges, said 175 conservancy workers had been deputed in three shifts to keep the beach, galleries, service road and footpaths litter-free. However, the unmoved bench said the beach remained the same when the judges visited it two days ago. It asked the Commissioner to go for walks along the beach every morning, at least for a month, along with the city police commissioner. They then posted the plea to 10 January for further hearing.
