2 is 1 in Kollywood; 2018 saw surprising sequels on big screen

Chennai: Call it a year of #MeTwo in K’town. Began 2018 with Kalakalappu 2, and what followed was Goli Soda 2, Thamizh Padam 2, Vishwaroopam 2, Saamy 2, Sandakozhi 2, Enthiran 2 and finally it ended with Maari 2. Too many twos.

The ‘super’stitious filmmakers here say they finally cracked the success formula. Make your sequel first and then do the first.

“Renduku apporum onnu, adhu dhaan ippo trendu,” says an aspiring director. Sounds like a punchline. Well, if you think he is a genius, you are wrong. The credits should go to ‘Thala’.

He acted in Billa, actually Billa(s), which is a remake of Rajinikanth starrer Billa, which again was a remake of Amitabh Bachchan starrer Billa nay Don. And Ajith’s Billa ended up coming in two parts. All know, the first was the second and the second was first.

Speaking of sequels, Maari 2 won negative reviews which eventually gave Maari 1 the tag of better entertainer. Well, the director of the film succeeded in his ploy. He must be saying, “Thanks to Maari 2, people now say Maari 1 was far better. Wait for Maari 3 to come out to make them say Maari 2 was much better.” And trust me I haven’t seen VIP 2 yet.

Meanwhile, sources say Simbu is not far behind. He is planning a sequel too – May be Manmadhan 2 or Vallavan 2. Apologies if you are thinking Vallavan was actually Manmadhan 2. So was Kuthu to Dum.

To keep you updated, Simbu is currently shooting for Vandha…Varuven. Sorry, Vandha Rajava Varuven.

Talking of sequels, one man who is truly exceptional is Raghava Lawrence. He is acting in a movie which is the fourth instalment of Muni series and third instalment in Kanchana series. He has baffled mathematicians too with his movie titles. After his horror thriller Muni came Kanchana, which he chose to call as Muni 2- Kanchana 1, then happened Muni 3- Kanchana 2. This summer comes Muni 4- Kanchana 3.

The other day Lawrence was heard saying that the story for Muni 5- Kanchana 4 is ready. Waiting to see when Kanchana will catch up with Muni. He is one filmmaker who can never get in to title troubles.

Meanwhile, another choreographer-actor Prabhudeva is twice happy doing two sequels simultaneously. He is part of Charlie Chaplin 2 and Devi 2. The former is not a biography of the world’s best comedian but a Sakthi Chidambaram film that is sure to make Chaplin turn in his grave.

Want to know how to make a cost-effective sequel? Watch Vishwaroopam 2. But for the title and some action scenes, two was the one here.

And director Hari was different from the rest. He came out with Saamy 2 but chose to name it Saamy Square. Yes, the movie was indeed a square with too many loose ends.

The difference between the two parts was that the camera ran rapid to catch all characters in Saamy while the ‘square’ saw even the artistes running around with the flying cameras and a dozen SUVs. His trilogy of Singam needed a lion’s heart from audience to watch.

If 2018 was for sequels, hope things are not the same in 2019. Wish more filmmakers come out saying ‘Oru Kadha Solatta…’
