Commuters in the neighbourhood are increasingly angered by the congestion at Nungambakkam in College Road and Nelson Manickam Road, so to speak.
According to sources, the junction which houses Loyola College, sees traffic snarls all the time, primarily because of the share autos and buses that stop near the institution.
“Since these vehicles halt at various places in the narrow road, it causes inconvenience to motorists. The absence of traffic police to monitor vehicular movement is the main problem. The presence of one would help regulate things here,” says Kanaga, a vendor.
Pedestrians also face a lot of difficulties during peak hours, as a few motorists drive on the elevated pathway meant for walking.
“Most of the college students and people coming to and from the railway station use the pathway. With this being encroached in this manner, we don’t have any space to walk,” says Sherlin, a student.
Murugan, an auto driver here too voices his opinion. “The share autos are diverted in two ways, one is the road that connects to Choolaimedu and the other to Aminjikarai, both of which involve going through College Road. Also, there are several illegal food stalls and eateries that contribute to the chaos here,” he feels.
