HIV transfusion: Teen’s father lodges complaint


Chennai: Following the death of the 19-year-old blood donor who was hospitalised at Government Rajaji Hospital, Madurai, for attempting suicide by consuming rat poison, the father of the boy suspects mystery. Raising eyebrows, he has lodged a police complaint.

The teen was was initially being treated at Ramanathapuram district hospital and later shifted to Madurai where the doctors stated he was given the best possible treatment in the intensive care unit. However, his father alleged him to be normal until Saturday night and died suddenly after puking blood. ‘I want the postmortem to be videorecorded,” said his father to the press.

In yet another incident, another woman from Salem claimed that she had also been transfused with HIV-infected blood. Speaking to reporters, the 26-year-old woman said she was being treated at the Mecheri primary health centre during her first pregnancy in 2014 and was suggested of transfusion. The blood was collected from Mettur Government Hospital and administered during delivery. When she became pregnant once again 2015 and took treatment in the same health centre, the blood test reports revealed to have contracted with HIV and is currently being treat at Omalur Government Hospital.

This yet another incident comes day after a woman from Mangadu made similar claims. When this reporter spoke to a few officials from State healthcare department regarding the Sattur GH probe they opined that the investigation report would not provide much details from that of preliminary statements as the donor was identified to be HIV positive way back in 2013.
