Chennai:Ā The Tik Tok application is like a drug to teenagers and the government should take action against it, PMK founder, Dr S Ramadoss, said today.
Ramadoss alleged that the Tik Tok app has transformed to become an evil force that will destroy the lives of the younger generation.
“It is like a drug to the people who use it. There is no monitoring of what content is shared on the app and it is completely unregulated. It’s sad to see so many people forgetting reality and getting lost in it, wasting their life,” he said.
“The app is bad especially for teenagers. It distracts them and leads them in a dangerous direction, ruining their life. The Indonesian government has banned Tik Tok and many other nations have recognised its harmful effects on minors. Our government should take steps to monitor and control it,” he said.
Ramadoss urged parents to speak to their children about Tik Tok and save them from becoming a slave to the “high” given by this “dangerous drug”.
Tik Tok is a video-sharing app where users upload short clips of themselves lip syncing popular songs or dialogues. Millions of teenagers seeking their 15 seconds of fame are flocking to Tik Tok. But, there have been allegations that videos with vulgar content find their way into the hands of minors through the app.
Media reports say that children and young teens are also tempted to share vulgar videos of themselves in the app in order to gain likes and shares.
Tik Tok became the most downloaded on Apple’s App Store in the first half of last year beating Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat.
Last summer, the Indonesian government banned the app after more than 1,70,000 people signed a petition saying that lip-syncing in revealing outfits was not suitable for children.
It was lifted only after Tik Tok representatives from China flew to Jakarta and promised to hire more people to weed out inappropriate content.
