Chennai: The neighbourhood of Ashok Nagar today woke up to a shocking news of a man and his wife’s death in a Corporation Park in the locality.

According to the police, Iruthaya Raj (61) and his wife Pushpa Mary (58), natives of Nagapattinam, were employed at the park at 48th Street, Ashok Nagar, on a contract basis by the city Corporation.

The couple worked there as gardeners and maintenance staff for the past three years. They were also given a single-room accommodation in the premises. It is said that the duo consumed poison and ended their life.

At 5.30 am today, the park supervisor found Pushpa dead inside the room and Iruthaya on the pedestrian ramp with bleeding ears. Their bodies were sent to Omandurar Government Hospital.

Sources claim that the couple were unhappy that they had to work in their old-age to meet their needs and nobody was taking care of them.

Their son Devendran was informed and he was on his way to the city from Nagapattinam. Ashok Nagar police have registered a case of suspicious death.
