Chennai: An Indian fisherman recently died in an incident involving the Sri Lankan Navy and it was condemned by the Tamilnadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami.
On 13 January, a group of fishermen in two boats were fishing at the Palk Straits when they were chased by the Lankan navy. Both the boats capsized and the fishermen fell into the sea. Eight of them were rescued while Muniasamy drowned.
The Chief Minister said, “I have often pointed out to the Centre incidents of the Sri Lankan navy chasing away Indian fishermen, damaging their nets and confiscating their boats while they were fishing in their traditional fishing zone of Palk Straits and pressed for quick action,”
He further said that AIADMK government would take all necessary steps to protect the livelihood of the Tamilnadu fishermen. A compensation of Rs 5 lakh was allotted to Muniasamy’s family from the Chief Minister’s Public Relief Fund.
Condemning the incident, fishermen from Rameswaram, Pamban and Mandapam in Ramanathapuram district kept off the seas on Wednesday.
