A month after Pammal Municipality started extracting drinking water from Sengazhuneer quarry at Sankar Nagar in Pammal, Anakaputhur Municipality has now followed suit with the Kamarajapuram quarry.
With this, the civic body is aiming to solve the drinking water needs of residents during summer. To mitigate the effects of the impending water crisis, Pallavaram, Pammal and Anakaputhur Municipalities are taking various steps to do extraction from various sources.
With Pallavaram taking the first step early last year, Pammal Municipality started the same from Sengazhuneer quarry, with the work order issued in September last year.
The 100-feet deep quarry pond is soon going to supply over six Millions of Litres Per Day (MLD), that is over 15 litres to each resident, it is said.
As for the Anakaputhur Municipality, the work order in this regard has been issued and it might take around three months for completion.
According to sources, once this project is executed, residents will get around 4.32 MLD water, that is 10 litres per resident, every day.
“The process involves using a 14-stage filter to procure consumable water. The civic body is already supplying through 220 mini power sumps installed in its 22 wards,” sources added.
Speaking on this, Anakaputhur resident Shanthakumar, said, “We request for speedy implementation of the project, as last year too, we witnessed shortage of the resource. With drinking water can prices skyrocketing, we are totally dependent on the Municipality for our needs.”
