Sagaa is a crime thriller directed by Murugesh, bankrolled by Selly Cinemas. It features Saran, Prithvi, Kishore, Sree Ram and Pandi in lead roles.
It is about a group of imprisoned youngsters who wish to break out from the jail and pursue their individual goals. The film has a solid plot. Packed with a good performance by all the young stars, the first half of the story rushes forward with several intense action sequence but towards the end it staggers a little as songs and many back stories of the characters tend to drag down the rhythm.
Nevertheless, the film does has its moments. Saran and Pandi, who play as Sathya and Kadhir are best friends, thick as thieves. The opening shot deserves applauds for its intense music and direction. Here, Sathya and Kadhir are chased by the police through streets of a shanty locality. Prithvi as Ganga delivers good performance as a hot headed rapist/criminal while Sree Raam who grabbed the audience when he starred in Pasanga deserves applauds for his portrayal as a stoic prisoner. The chemistry between Sathya. Kadhir and Siva (Kishore) is well-built. The trio stand out, beautifully depicting their friendship to each other.
The atmosphere inside the jail is captured authentically. The set designers create a dark jail cell with dilapidated walls and dirty toilets. Shabir, the music director and lyricist offers note worthy songs. Though the songs tend to drag the plot pace, they are nevertheless nice to hear as most are peppered with powerful lyrics related to love and friendship. The actors carry the movie on their shoulder along with a solid screenplay, making Sagaa a one time watchable affair.
