HC seeks report on Chinna Thambi’s whereabouts


Chennai: The Madras High Court today asked the State government to submit a report on the whereabouts of the elephant named Chinna Thambi, who has been making headlines for the past few days.

The direction was given by judges S Manikumar and Subramonium Prasad following a petition filed by animal welfare activist Muralidharan. The report has been asked to be filed on 11 February.

Meanwhile, residents of Krishnapuram, where Chinna Thambi is camped at present staged a protest seeking the removal of the pachyderm from the area. The villagers alleged that they will incur huge loss if the animal enters the farm land.

Final rites of Dakshayani performed
The final rites of Asia’s oldest captive elephant Dakshayani (88) belonging to the Travancore Devaswom Board was performed on Wednesday. The elephant passed away in Trivandrum on Tuesday. Dakshayani was ill for the past few months. Dakshayani took part in several temple festivals.
