Kumbakonam: The police have arrested five men on Thursday for allegedly killing a PMK worker Ramalingam in Thirubuvanam, Kumbakonam, after he questioned some people about religious conversion in the area.
According to reports, S Nijam Ali, Sarbudeen, Rizwan, Mohamed Azarudeen and Mohamed Raiyaz have been arrested in connection with the case.
Many political leaders condemned the incident. While BJP national secretary H Raja visited the deceased’s house and consoled the family members, the PMK and BJP alleged that Ramalingam was targeted for resisting religious conversion in the region. S Ramadoss, PMK founder, sought a Special Investigation Team to probe the case and a financial compensation to the bereaved family from the central and state governments.
Tweeting about the incident, BJP Tamilnadu president Tamilisai Soundararajan said “Ramalingam was killed the next day he prevented religious conversion.. the culprits should be punished.”
