Chennai: In an unusual incident, the IIT-Madras campus turned into a crime scene after a student stabbed another, allegedly over a girl. However, police officials maintained that the incident took place due to difference of opinion and no girl was involved. On the eve of Valentineās Day, a student, identified as Pramod Kaushik (24), a second-year M.Tech student and native of Dhani Phogat village, Dadri taluk, Bhiwani district, Haryana, was stabbed by his classmate near the central library. The police have secured the attacker, a student named Manoj (24), who is also from Haryana.
According to sources, as the two were walking back, an angry argument ensued between them over a girl and the duo started attacking each other. Later, Manoj stabbed Pramod with a knife and fled.
Pramod suffered injuries on his shoulder and stomach. Shocked fellow students immediately informed the college authorities and rushed him to a private hospital where doctors operated upon him.
He is in the intensive care unit, said a source, adding that both men were in love with the same girl and this might have prompted Manoj to take the drastic step.
However, a senior police official said they were waiting to receive a written complaint from Pramod even as Manoj is in their custody.
However, he claimed that a difference of opinion was the reason for the violence and no girl was involved in the incident.
He stated that action would be taken against Manoj.
