Chennai: Two years after its proposal, work on the biomining process atKannadapalayam dumpyard is all set to begin by the end of this month.
An official said the machines required to carry out the biomining process are getting ready in Coimbatore and will reach the site soon.
“Segregation of waste in the dumpyard will begin in a week or two. The plastics which cannot be sold or reused will be used to generate fuel by pyrolysis process,” the official said.
He further said once all the garbage is removed from the dumpyard, it will be used to construct a scientific park and building for official purposes.
The official added that the biomining process will begin with the pre-stabilisation where bio-culture is sprayed.
“Bio-culture is basically a bacteria which will rapidly degrade the material that is not fully bio-degraded. It will stabilise the dump, which includes sanitising it, freeing it from pathogens and making it free of ammonia, methane, hydrogen sulphide and other obnoxious gases,” the official explained.
Sources said the work which was supposed to begin in 2017 was delayed to internal reasons. Almost 1.45 lakh tonne is dumped at Kannadapalayam at present. Around 2 lakh people reside in 39 wards of Tambaram and on an average, 100 tonnes of garbage is generated everyday.
It may be noted that the garbage from Sembakkam dumpyard too was removed using biomining process.
