Chennai: What was supposed to end on a romantic note, landed a young man in some serious trouble. Sakthivel (22) from Pattabiram was manhandled by a group of men at Ice House yesterday after they found him walking on the streets wearing a burkha.

An ITI student, he was in a relationship with a Muslim girl.

According to the police, Sakthivel was challenged by his girlfriend to wear the burkha and walk from Royapettah to Marina Beach after he allegedly asked her for a kiss. She said she would kiss him at beach if he completed the task. She also gave him a burkha to wear.

Accepting the challenge, Shakthivel wore it and along with glasses. When he was at Vasudevapuram, Ice House which is two streets away from the local police station, a bunch of youth found the ‘burkha clad woman’s’ walk a bit odd and the shades added to their suspicion. Subsequently, they stopped him.

Sakthivel was reportedly beaten and taken to the police station. Members of Tamilnadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam, his college principal and parents also arrived at the station.

Speaking to this newspaper, a police official said, “During the inquiry everyone agreed that the boy was innocent and we decided to let him off at 9.30 pm.”
