Chennai: Fire broke out at the hostel of Saveetha EngineeringĀ College, Thandalam, on the city outskirts early this morning. A huge tragedy was averted as students were evacuated from the spot on time.
At 5.30 am, fire began spreading on the fourth floor ofĀ men’s hostel. Mattresses and cots were gutted.
Four fire tenders from Sriperumbudur, Poonamallee, HyundaiĀ Plant and Oragadam were pressed into service.Ā The students rushed out of the floor to safety and theĀ entire building was evacuated in a short span of time.
A Fire Officer said, “It took us four hours to put out theĀ flammes. A short-circuit in the air-conditioner is suspectedĀ to be the reason. None of the students were injured in the
incident. Around 30 beds were gutted in the fire.”
The men’s hostel has eight floors and occupies 1700 students in 228 rooms. The fire reportedly took place in a dormitory occupying 30 students.
