Chennai: Advocate D Dinesh Kumar filed a petition in the Madras High Court challenging the construction of an arch in memory of former Chief Minister and AIADMK founder M G Ramachandran across Beach Road near the PWD headquarters.

Dinesh Kumar pointed out that the arch was constructed at a cost of Rs 2.52 crore and it was encroaching on the Kamarajar Salai on the Marina beach, which falls under the Tamilnadu Highways Act, 2001.

He further charged that no public interest would be served in constructing the arch as a memorial for MGR was already built on the Marina, allegedly against coastal regulation rules.

Last month, the matter had came up at the court and a bench headed by Justice M Sathyanarayanan had permitted the government to go ahead with the construction but asked it to opened without any fanfare or issues. After this, a simple function was held to unveil the arch.
