Chennai:Â A total of 8.87 lakh students, including private candidates in Tamilnadu and Puducherry, will write the plus-two board exams at 2,944 centres from tomorrow till 19 March.
Around 50,000 teachers (48,000 from government institutions and 2,000 from private schools) have been roped in for invigilation and evaluation duty. Various steps have been taken to check malpractices, said sources in the Directorate of Government Examinations (DGE).
To avoid long-distance travel for government school students, the directorate has allowed 150 new exam centres so that candidates need not travel more than 10 km to write their exams.
Among the students, girls outnumber boys. Of the 8.61 lakh students from 7,082 schools, 4.6 lakh are girls and they are 58,905 more in number than boys. Including two transgenders, 26,885 private candidates will write this exam.
This year, 5.28 lakh students will appear for the science stream exams and 2.61 lakh students for the commerce stream. There are 57,346 students taking up the exam for vocational courses and 13,952 students have registered for the arts group.
From 158 exam centres in Chennai, 49,419 students would appear. In Puducherry, 15,408 students would write exams in 40 centres.
Around 2,400 differently-abled candidates would avail of various concessions including extra one hour and scribe. Over 4,000 flying and standing squad members would undertake surprise checks to ensure fair exam. Meanwhile, plus-one exams begin 6 March and class 10 exams, 14 March.
