Chennai Metro Rail Ltd’s (CMRL’s) has introduced internet-connected electronic-chipset-enabled electric scooters at Anna Nagar Tower Metro station, Chennai.

In this initiative, which has been launched by CMRL in association with Bengaluru-based Vogo Automotive Pvt Ltd, an electric scooter rental company, passengers or general public can drive off a e-scooter from any of these stations for a price starting from as low as Rs 0.17 per minute with a base price starting from as low as Rs 10.

To use this facility, commuters will have to download the Vogo app for Android and iOS devices, attach their driving licence photo and key in a one-time password they receive on their smartphones to a key box attached to the vehicle to start the ride. As of now, the services are available from 6 am to 10 pm. Apart from Anna Nagar Tower station, the facility has also been introduced in Guindy, Alandur and Vadapalani stations and will soon be extended to other stations.

This aside, CMRL plans to introduce wifi connectivity, dynamic digital maps and entertainment content inside the moving trains. The wifi connectivity is aimed at providing uninterrupted online engagement for the passengers especially working professionals who need non-stop internet connectivity even while travelling. The dynamic maps will allow live tracking of the train and show distance covered, time and upcoming stations. The maps will also turn into advertisements thereby becoming a source of income for CMRL. The maps currently in the trains show only the next station.
