Ayyanar temples are nothing new to us. Every area usually has an Ayyanar statue, popularly known as ‘Kaaval Dheivam’. Interestingly, we have one such temple at Bharaniputhur on Mangadu Main Road, Chennai. Well-known for his fierce appearance, this Ayyanar stands tall at nearly 25-feet.
This temple is loved and visited often by the devotees in and around Porur. Last year, a new deity, a 30-feet-tall Pratyangara Devi, was erected at the temple premises and the kumbhabishekam took place in a grand manner.
Devotees throng the temple in large numbers during all the auspicious days, especially during Amavaasai.
Special abhishekams and poojas are performed on these days. The special raahu kaala pooja performed here is a major highlight. Also, the poojas held on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays are highly populated.
“It is believed if people want to get back their stolen items, they can visit this temple and pray for their return. Also, children who continue to have bad dreams can also come pray here. Visiting here will definitely give a fresh feel,” says a 60-year-old visitor, Kanakavalli. “This huge statue with a big moustache will grab everyone’s attention easily,” she adds.
