Motorists in Chennai suburb cry for good road

“During peak hours, when you take the Kundrathur Main Road, all you can see is pollution, not the road or other vehicles. This is the reason why accidents grow in number on this stretch,” says Kannan from Kundrathur.

It is not just him, many motorists experience a painful ride on this road everyday. The chaotic situation is due to many incomplete works on this stretch.

“Last year, SWD (Storm Water Drain) construction and underground pipe laying works began. As the road laying works started, we were a happy lot. But due to some reason only half of the road was laid properly and the other half has been neglected, and it has now become a disaster,” Kannan says.

There are a number of schools and hospitals on this stretch and because of the road condition, air pollution is inevitable. This in turn affects the children and patients here.

“Accidents are taking place on a daily basis due to the uneven and bumpy road. As this is already a narrow stretch, the area becomes dense during the peak hours. Heavy vehicles plying through this road add to our owes. Even the traffic police here face the heat because of this,” he adds.

“Even if officials take time to lay a new road, they should at least have control over the entry of heavy vehicles, which are in fact the major reasons for the pollution and traffic congestion here,” states Kannan. Motorists want this stretch to be levelled soon so that they can have a smooth ride.
