In a new civic development, a solid waste management plant is being set up at Sembakkam Municipality, at a cost of Rs 15 lakh.
It may be noted that more than 65,000 people reside in the 15 wards of the Municipality, and it is said that around 20.50 tonnes of garbage is generated every day on an average.
Out of this, 12 tonnes is segregated at the micro compost yards and converted into manure, while the remaining comprises plastic, iron and electronic waste.
Since the conservancy workers are finding it difficult to segregate these, the idea of a solid waste collection plant was discussed.
Following this, the plant is being set up on 1,400 square feet, with 90 per cent of the work completed. It is expected that the facility will be open for use in two weeks time.
