Madurai: The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) yesterday ordered the Tamilnadu government to pay Rs 2 lakh compensation to a law student who was allegedly assaulted by three police personnel in Virudhunagar district in 2012.
Observing that the police personnel violated human rights, SHRC judge D Jayachandran slapped the fine of Rs 2 lakh on the police personnel and directed the government to recover it from special sub-inspector (SSI) A Anburaj and police constables Rajasekhar and Prabu.
In 2 January 2012 P Manokaran the petitioner had accompanied his uncle to the police station in connection with a civil dispute case and intervened and told the police official that as it was a civil dispute it should be decided by a civil court.
Angered by this the SSI A Anburaj and two constables stripped and made him kneel down. They also allegedly made casteist remarks on the petitioner who was fourth year law student then.Ā The officials also filed a case against him alleging that he interfered with their work. A Judicial Magistrate court hearing the case acquitted him and directed him to get admitted to a hospital.
The SSI was asked to pay Rs 1 lakh, and the two constables 50,000 thousand each for allegedly assaulting Manokaran.
