Chennai: Terming the by-polls to 18 of the 21 Assembly seats along with 18 April Lok Sabha polls as a mini-election, DMK president M K Stalin Sunday released the candidates’ list, nominating Poondi K Kalaivanan for the high-profile Tiruvarur seat held by his father and late chief minister M Karunanidhi.
He also said he would launch his campaign 20 March from Tiruvarur.
Releasing the list to the media, Stalin said Poondi Kalaivanan would contest from Tiruvarur, which was held by Karunanidhi who was elected for a record 13th time in the 2016 Assembly polls.
Tiruvarur was Karunanidhi’s home turf and his death in August last year necessitated the by-poll.
The by-poll to Tiruvarur was earlier scheduled for 28 January but was deferred by the EC due to the relief works being undertaken after Cyclone Gaja battered the district.
