LS polls: Filing of nominations to begin tomorrow; Time extended in Madurai

Chennai: Filing of nomination papers for phase-1 of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections began this morning. With the general elections and by-poll for 18 Assembly constituencies slated to be held in Tamilnadu on 18 April, contestants will be filing their nominations from tomorrow.

The last date of filing nomination in Tamilnadu is 26 March and the papers will be scrutinised on 27 March. The last date to withdraw nominations is 29 March.

The States where polls will be held in the second phase include Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Manipur, Odisha, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Puducherry.

Seventeen States, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra and West Bengal and Union Territories Andaman, Lakshadweep and Chandigarh are going to the polls 11 April. The last date for candidates submitting nomination papers for the first phase is 25 March and scrutiny will take place 26 March. The last date for withdrawal of nominations is 28 March. Apart from the parliamentary elections, Assembly elections to Andhra Pradesh, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh are being conducted 11 April. Also, by-elections to 28 seats in the 147-strong Odisha Assembly are being conducted on the same day.

Elections to the 17th Lok Sabha are being conducted in seven phases in the country. The first phase will be held on 11 April, second on 18 April, third on 23 April, fourth on 29 April, fifth on 6 May, sixth on 12 May and seventh phase on 19 May. Election results of all the phases will be announced 23 May.

Meanwhile in Madurai, where Kallazhagar festival is slated to take place on 18 April, the polling time has been extended up to 8 pm. Sources said election observers will reach Tamilnadu on Tuesday to monitor expenses and other things.

Results: 23 May
