Chennai: Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) president Kamal Haasan has hinted that the party’s second list of candidates might contain more women candidates.
Responding to the question on why there was only one woman candidate in the party’s Lok Sabha candidate list released Wednesday, Kamal said wait for the second list.
Addressing mediapersons here along with his party members, Kamal said, “This is first list of candidates. The second list will be announced 24 March in Coimbatore for the rest of the constituencies.”
Some prominent personalities in the first list of candidates included actor Nasser’s wife Kameela who will be contesting in Chennai Central. Founder of Dalit Munnetra Kazhagam and advocate Abin Poyyamozhi will be contesting in Villupuram while retired IAS officer A G Mourya will battle for Chennai North constituency. In the list of 21 candidates, about eight of them are businessmen, three doctors and also three lawyers.
Kamal also hinted that he might contest in the elections. “I will let my party workers to give me the best options to consider for before I contest,” he said.
When pressed with further questions regarding his decision on contesting, Kamal said that all doubts will be put to rest when the second list of candidates are announced.
He then revealed the reason why it took time for his party to announce the candidates names. “It’s a long process. We have been interviewing many candidates over the last few weeks,” said Kamal.
“We are also working on our party’s manifesto. It will be released soon.”
He went on to add that the manifesto of other parties are old.
He later spoke about the recent exit of C K Kumaravel, entrepreneur and founder of Naturals Salons who left the party citing differences. “Even if he hadn’t quit from the party, we would have removed him as disciplinary action,” said Kamal.
The actor-politician also voiced his opinion about the release of convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. “I feel that it’s about time that we let compassion prevail over the case,” he commented.
