Paying heed to the several requests made by passengers, four escalators will now come up at Tambaram Railway station in Chennai.
The foundation stone laying ceremony for the facility was held Friday at the railway station during which Sriperumbudur MP K N Ramachandran unveiled the plaque of the foundation stone for the four escalators in the presence of DMK MLA S R Raja and Additional Divisional Railway Manager-3, K Manoj.
Speaking to News Today, a senior railway official said each escalator would be constructed at a cost of Rs one crore.
“We are planning to complete the work within six months. The platforms in which the escalators will come up is yet to be decided,” the official said.
It may be noted that there are two escalators already functioning at the Tambaram Railway station. One is operated at the platform No 1 located on the west side and another one at the stairs near the east side. Several people make use of the services at the Tambaram Railway station. Senior citizens have been requesting for the construction of the escalators in the platforms 6, 7 and 8 where the south bound trains are operated.
