Arulmigu Ramanatheeswarar Sivagama Sundari Ambal temple which is very popular among the residents of Porur has a beautiful history. The temple is located near Porur roundtana.
It is said that Porur was a dense forest in the olden days and when Lord Ram cane here in search for Sita, he stopped near a gooseberry tree. His intuition told him that there was a Shiva lingam under that very tree and he started his 48-day meditation here, praying for the safety of Sita.
On the 48th day, Lord Shiva, who gave dharshan to Ram, showed him the right way to reach Sita. Hence, this temple which is located at the very spot was named after both the Gods.
It is also said that those who are not able to go all the way to Rameswaram to perform parikaram can do it here at this temple. This is the reason why this shrine is called ‘Uthara Rameswaram’.
The main deity is a 6-feet-tall Ramanatheeswarar, and the presiding deities are Sivagama Sundari, Vinayakar, Valli Dheivanai Murugan, Bhairava and Saneeswarar. One of the specialities is that all poojas that are to be performed to Guru (a navagraha) are done to Ramanatheeswarar.
During ‘theipirai ashtami’, special abishekams are performed for Kaala Bhairavar here. Also, the walls here have beautiful and intricate works.
It is also believed that if people who want to get married or those who have ‘nagadhosham’ can come and pray here. Also, those who are facing problems in life can visit the temple for 11 Thursdays and light neivilakku. There is a special place for Durga here, and on Tuesdays and Fridays women perform special poojas to the Goddess.
During the renovation works at the temple, rare inscriptions belonging to the Chola period were found. With the help of this inscription it was known that this temple was named ‘Thiruperunkovil’ during Rajendra Cholan period.
Every year, Mahasivaratri is celebrated in a grand manner at this shrine. Apart from this, navaratri, karthigai, panguni utsavam and gurupeyarchi festivals are celebrated by conducting special poojas here. The temple is open from 6 am to 11.30 am and 5 pm to 8.30 pm.
