Chennai: Kindness is the magic mantra to everything that we all can practice in our everyday lives, said Buddhist monk from Nepal, Ani Choying Drolma, who is well known for her music.

She was delivering the 90th lecture series of the Rotary Club of Madras organised here, Tuesday. The event also saw a joint meeting of the Rotary Club of Madras and Rotary Club of Madras East.

Ani Choying Drolma spoke about how she became a nun. “We live in a society where patriarchy is practiced. That was something that really bothered me. I always had a question why is it that boys are always better than girls and I always used to challenge boys and indulge in fight. I then decided to become a nun to free myself from the fear of getting married,” she said.

“After going to the monastery, I was really taken care of as a wounded child and was allowed to be child and that was how I was healed and it helped in reducing the anger I had in the heart. I was cleansed to become more happier,” she added.

Ani Choying is also known for her social service as she helps facilitate education to more than 300 girl children and also runs dialysis centres in Nepal. She also spoke how her music helped her start doing humanitarian works. “I never thought that I could become a musician. My songs are those that I learnt to meditate. Seeing my music, I was invited to America for a concert and that was where I saw money for the first time and from then on I never stopped,” she said.

“My aim was to facilitate a place for young girls who don’t have a place and support from the family to really pursue towards the goal. I wanted to give them education and then the money gave me the power to start my own mission of helping the girls. Today, I am able to take care of 300 children’s education and able to provide them safe atmosphere to pursue their goals,” she added.

“We did not have kidney transplant and dialysis service facilities back home and I lost my mother because of it. I then decided to establish the service centre in Nepal. Today, I have established four centres in the country with free dialysis services,” she said.

Her only advice to people is to be kind and compassionate towards everything. “One doesn’t need to be rich or poor to practice it, she said and added that ‘People also must feel blessed and should spend few minutes everyday in meditation.”
