The residents of Semmancheri and Perumbakkam are a relieved lot. For, they may finally have easy access to Tambaram and Chengalpet, via Medavakkam and Arasan Kazhani.

For long, the residents have been requesting authorities to operate direct buses between the stretch.

However, the road here was too narrow with just 10 feet width and was in a battered condition, making it difficult to operate heavy vehicles.

Sources said the Perumbakkam Village Panchayat did not take any action on the requests, stating that there were not enough funds.

“However, following persistent requests by residents, now the Slum Clearance Board has come forward to widen the road,” sources added.

It is said the project will be taken up at a cost of Rs 25 lakh and the width will be increased from 10 to 33 feet.
“After the widening process, the stretch will become a two-way road, making it easier to operate buses. The work has already commenced, blue metal has been deposited and the area levelled. The entire activity is expected to be completed in two weeks,” sources added.
