Single Teacher Schools (STS) of Swami Vivekananda Rural Development Society has raised Rs 75 lakh in the fund-raising programme for its 850 schools during the 13th annual day celebration held at Vani Mahal, G N Chetty Road, T Nagar, recently.
STS honorary secretary and resident of Ashok Nagar, R P Krishnammachari, informed that the donations were made by corporate companies, philanthropists, clubs and individuals for the benefit of STS students.
He said the aim of STS is to provide quality education, coupled with Indian culture, tradition, moral values and patriotism to kids living in remote villages of Tamilnadu and also prevent school dropouts.
Krishnammachari said there are 25,000 kids studying in 850 single teacher schools and in 850 villages in six districts – Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Coimbatore, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur and Vellore.
He said classes are conducted by women teachers as part of women empowerment for those living in remote villages and they are graduates.
Krishnammachari said that 583 bathrooms-cum-toilets were constructed and 200 numbers are under construction under ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan programme’.
Music Academy president N Murali, STS founder-director S Vedanta Ji, president K N Krishnamurthy and other eminent personalities participated in the annual day. Bombay Jayashri Ramnath and troupe presented a music concert on the occasion.
