Jaipur: After the surprising outburst and confrontation with the on-field umpire during the India Premier League match against Rajasthan Royals, Chennai Super Kings captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was fined 50 per cent on his match fee yesterday.
When Indian umpire Ulhas Gandhe flip-flopped on a no ball, an angry Dhoni rushed out of the dug-out to challenge the umpire’s call. Gandhe who had tried to rule a waist high full toss as no ball by Rajasthan Royal’s all-rounder Ben Stokes, reversed his decision after square leg umpire Bruce Oxenford did not signal for it. Dhoni could be seen angrily gesturing at Gandhe and Oxenford convinced ‘Captain Cool’ to head back to the dug-out after some time.
In a statement, the BCCi said, “MS Dhoni, the Chennai Super Kings captain, was fined 50 percent of his match fees for breaching the VIVO Indian Premier League’s (IPL) Code of Conduct during his team’s match against Rajasthan Royals at Jaipur.”
“Dhoni admitted to the Level 2 offence 2.20 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct and accepted the sanction,” it further stated. It is to be noted that in IPL, it is the franchise that will pay the fine on a player’s behalf. According to the ICC Code of Conduct, which governs the IPL, showing serious dissent at an umpire’s decision by words or action can lead to a maximum punishment of one-Test or two-ODI ban.
