Chennai: The recently rechristened Puratchi Thalaivar Dr M G Ramachandran Central Railway Station has got the rights for holding the longest railway station name in India. However, it lost by just one letter for becoming the world’s longest railway station name.
According to reports, the record for the longest railway station in the world is held by the 58-letter ‘Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch’ in Wales.
The Krantivira Sangolli Rayanna Bengaluru City in Karnataka has second longest railway station name in India. It may be noted that the station got this name in 2015. The Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus stands third with 33 letters.
Ever since Chennai Central Railway Station was renamed on 5 April after actor-turned-politician, Dr M G Ramachandran, rail commuters across the city and those visiting the station from other states are finding it difficult to recognise it. Many continue to call it as ‘Chennai Central’.
