YMCA Madras to organise Hockey, Carrom tournaments

Chennai: YMCA Madras will organise the 35th annual District Carrom championship and South Zone Men’s hockey tournament here from today.

While the carrom event, to be held in 14 categories that offers a total prize money of Rs 1.5 lakh, would be held at YMCA Royapettah, the Hockey tournament, will be held at the astro-turf Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium, YMCA Madras, Board of Directors and Organising Committee Chairman B Ravikumar David and Secretary/Convener J Eric Christopher told reporters.

In all 12 teams would participate in the event, to be jointly organised by YMCA Madras and St Paul’s Recreation Club. The teams are divided into four groups of three teams each and after the league phase, top two from each group would qualify for the quarterfinals. The final is scheduled on 1 May. Last year’s winner GST-Chennai and runner-up Integral Coach Factory (ICF) would be participating in this edition.

While the winner would carry home a prize money of Rs 40,000, the runner-up would get Rs 30,000. The third and fourth placed teams would get Rs 20,000 and Rs 10,000 respectively. Tournament Director Suriyaprakash said in the event of a goalless draw at the end of regulation time, there would not be any extra time and the winner would be
decided by penalty shoot out.

Following is the groupings :

Group A : GST-Chennai, SDAT Kovilpatti, St Paul’s Recreation Club.
Group B : Indian Bank, Southern Railway, Chennai Hockey.
Group C : ICF, Income-Tax, Ashok Hockey Academy-Andhra Pradesh.
Group D : DYES-Bangalore, Loyola College, Pondicherry Hockey.
