Rameswaram:Â The Tamilnadu government has tightened the security cover in Rameswaram in the aftermath of the deadly bomb attacks in Sri Lanka, in which 310 people were killed and 500 others injured.
Security at the famous Lord Ramanathaswamy Temple has been beefed up and coastal vigil heightened following the serial bomb blasts in Sri Lanka which left police said Tuesday. Through out the year, pilgrims from across the country visit the temple and people entering the premises were thoroughly screened.
The travel time by a motorised boat from Thalaimannar in Sri Lanka to Rameswaram is just under an hour and so round-the-clock vigil has been put up by Coast Guard, Coastal Marine Police and the local police as it was possible for terrorists involved in the bombings to enter India through the sea route. Railway stations and bus stands were also being monitored.
Coast Guard personnel were patrolling the sea around Rameswaram in hover craft and a helicopter was also monitoring the situation.
Seven suicide bombers believed to be members of an Islamist extremist group – the National Tawheed Jamath (NTJ) – carried out a series of devastating blasts that tore through three churches and luxury hotels in Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday, inflicting huge casualty. No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks, but police have so far arrested 24 people.
