Nagapattinam: The police arrested nine youngsters for allegedly spreading through WhatsApp and other social media derogatory remarks about a particular community.
On 21 April, the youngsters had held a meeting to discuss about a clash between two communities in Ariyalur district during the general elections.
Speaking to reporters, Superintendent of Police C Vijayakumar said that the department had received complaints the accused had recorded derogatory messages related to other community and had spread the same on social media.
The police officials in the cybercrime wing in Porayar conducted an inquiry in this connection and arrested nine people, who are all said to be belonging to various villages around Porayar.
They were charged with attempting to trigger communal clashes and have been remanded to judicial custody.
Vijayakumar also warned that action under the Goondas Act would be taken against those who spread hate messages on social media and trigger communal clashes.
