Chennai: If you are a long-time resident of Porur, you would know that Porur lake is considered one of the iconic spots in the locality. But what makes this spot more special and divine is the near-by Akilaandeswari Samedha Aadhi Gubera Jalagandeswarar temple.

Recently, a marble Kasi Lingam was installed and the temple’s Kumbabishekam was held. The shrine is located on Mount-Poonamallee High Road, and its name has an interesting story behind it.

It is said that the Shiva statue was taken from Porur Lake several hundred years ago. While ‘Aadhi’ means old, ‘Jalagandeswarar’ means Lord Eswara found inside a water body.

The presiding deities at the temple are Akilandeswari Amman, Nandi Baghavan, Vinayakar, Murugan, Shiva Durgai Dhakshanamoorthy, Chandigeswarar, Panchamuga Anjaneyar, Iyyappan, Muthumariamman, and Kaala Bhairava.

There are many unique elements here. This is the only temple in entire Tamilnadu where the Navagrahas are found in the form of Arthanaadheeswarar, claim the temple officials.

Both Arasamaram and Vepamaram are present on the premises, and under them, a four-faced Vinayakar statue surrounded by Naga has been installed. People whose marriages are getting delayed can come and offer special poojas here.

This Chitra Pournami, the temple is also planning to install Chitragupta’s statue. Special abishekams and poojas are performed on Pradhosham, Sankatahara Chathurthi, Kirthigai and other auspicious days.

Especially, Amavasai Tharpanam is popular here. Since the temple is located near the lake, tharpanam is performed by people almost on a daily basis. Devotees also throng the temple in large numbers during Mahalaya Amavasai every year.

“This is one of the famous temples in Porur and is loved by everyone. It is spacious and serves as a divine spot for senior citizens. We visit here every week without fail as the temple gives you a positive vibe. For those who want to get married, visiting this temple will give a positive result. This is a must visit place for all peace lovers,” says a local visitor.

The temple timings are 7-11 am and 5.30-8.30 pm.
