Chennai: An ambulance driver of Kolli hills has been arrested and questioned by the police in the Rasipuram ‘baby trafficking’ case.
Driver Murugesan reportedly confessed that he had ‘procured’ 10 babies from the Kolli hills for retired nurse Amuthavalli of Namakkal Government Hospital, who is now in the middle of the racket, to sell to prospective parents.
Amuthavalli and her husband were arrested after an audio of her boasting that she was in the business of selling babies to couples for the last three decades went viral.
She says in the audio recording that she demands an additional Rs 70,000 for procuring a fake birth certificate for the baby that has been sold.
Following this, the Namakkal collector ordered an investigation into birth certificates issued in the Rasipuram area and in Kolli hills in the last two years. The Namakkal municipality issued 4,500 birth certificates and the 1,000 in the Kolli hills.
Ten teams have been formed to get to the bottom of the scandal.
Yesterday, nurse Parveen of Namakkal Government Hospital was also arrested along with Murugesan for aiding Amuthavalli in her baby sales racket.
