Chennai: The customs officials at the Chennai international airport arrested 18 passengers and retrieved gold worth over Rs one crore from them on Saturday.
The passengers had arrived from Dubai and Colombo on Saturday said a media report. on Saturday, the officials intercepted 14 women passengers and recovered 3.64 kg of 24 carat gold.
They also retrieved 892 grams of gold kept hidden inside the toilet of a national carrier that arrived from Colombo. The plane was scheduled to proceed to Hyderabad in its domestic run.
The constant vigil by officials of Air Intelligence Unit of the customs department led to the seizure of a total of 5.33 kg of gold valued at Rs 1.76 crore.
