Chennai: Construction of the Velacheri twin flyovers, currently underway at the Vijaya Nagar junction in the neighbourhood, is expected to change the outlook of the locality and ease traffic movement.
Although the work on the Velacheri-Taramani stretch is progressing at a good pace, residents here are unhappy with the way things are taking shape.
Tansi Nagar Welfare Association Secretary M Balakrishnan said, “The Taramani Link Road-Tansi Nagar junction is a crucial location. Vehicles move in five different ways at this spot, and added to that the flyover ends at the entrance of Tansi Nagar. This creates a lot of inconvenience to the people. They should have planned it in such a way that it ends 100 meters before or after the entrance point of the street so that people can pass through under the bridge without much hassle. It has become challenging for water lorries and heavy vehicle to enter into or take a turn from Tansi Nagar.”
Pointing out this reason, the residents allege that the flyover plan is just wrong. “We need to clearly know when the construction would get over. From the pace in which it is being carried out here, it would take two more years to get finished.”
Since five roads converge at the junction, many feel the need for installing a traffic signal and a rubber speed breaker here.
“Even as the work is underway, to avert untoward incidents, a traffic signal is the need of the hour, we can’t wait till the construction work gets done. It is chaotic during peak hours,” complains a resident. Regarding these issues, the Tansi Nagar Welfare Association has written to the authorities concerned.
