Automated system will fine traffic offenders in Anna Nagar

Think twice before you jump signal in Anna Nagar. The city traffic police have installed 64 cameras with Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) software around the neighbourhood to identify and penalise traffic rule offenders.

The 64 cameras have been installed in and around the streets of Anna Nagar at Thirumangalam, Shanthi Colony, Jawaharlal Nehru Road and Roundtana. The system enables policemen to identify traffic violators without being physically present on the spot. The system was put in place with a partnership with Hyundai as part of Rs 3.5 crore project to make neighborhood Chennai’s first ‘Traffic Regulation Observed Zone’ (TROZ)

In April last year, News Today was the first to report on the TROZ project. It was inaugurated by Traffic District Commissioner – West Region, I Eswaran back then.

Explaining the technology, a police officer said, “All 64 cameras can capture HD footage. The Red Light Violation Detector (RLVDs) identifies when a vehicle crosses the stop line and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) software captures the details of the vehicle.”

“The cameras are monitored from a control room near Anna Nagar Roundtanna. The entire process is automated. The Contactless Enfocement System will capture the scene of violation and send the image along with the fine challan to the doorstep of the offender. They can pay the fines online,” he added.

The details pertaining to the vehicle registration number are sourced from Vahan, the portal of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. The police officer said he hopes that the violations will reduce once they begin issuing the challans. The system will be implemented in other parts of the city soon.
