Chennai: Civic issues continue to plague the space under the Kodambakkam flyover, with residents repeatedly reporting about food waste being dumped by vegetable vendors here.
According to reports, about five years ago, the Kodambakkam vegetable market was shifted from under the flyover to Mambalam High Road near the railway station. Although most of the vendors went away, a few are alleged to be continuing their stalls here.
“Corporation officials moved many of them to Mambalam High Road. But some of them have returned, thus adding to the confusion,” said a resident, noting that the presence of these stalls hinder smooth vehicular movement.
Those living near the bridge, also pointed out the health hazards. “The waste disposed results in mosquito breeding’, said a person living here.
Other than dumping garbage, unregulated car parking too is a cause for concern. Some vehicles are parked for weeks and they keep gathering dust,” rued Aziz, a resident.
“Authorities should take action against the owners. These spaces can be turned into commercial zones, which maybe a win-win for all,” he stated.
