Chennai: It has been a few years since the Mada Streets around the Kapaleeswarar Temple were turned into a one-way.
However, motorists still enter the streets in a wrong way causing trouble to fellow motorists and pedestrians.
This happens especially in the South Mada Street in which vehicles from Ramakrishna Mutt Road including two-wheelers and autos enter into the street which is a no-entry zone.
Speaking about this, Shyamala a resident of Mylapore says “The purpose of making the Mada streets one-way is to reduce traffic congestion in this street which also helps elderly people going to temple by walk. I have been a regular visitor of the Kapaleeswarar temple during evenings and with motorists violating the rule, it has become a problem. With vendors occupying the footpath, we use the road to walk and with motorists flouting the rules, sometimes it just makes us elderly people afraid since vehicles come in the opposite direction.”
Many people say that despite the presence of traffic police at the junction, this continues to happen. Sathyamoorthi, a regular visitor of Kapaleeswarar temple says, “Ever since the Mada Streets were turned into one-way, traffic police are on the vigil in the junction however what is worrying is that despite their presence people continue to flout the rules.”
“Traffic cops are allowing it at times when the traffic plying at the street is very less and they will not allow vehicles here during peak hours, However, people who are allowed once are trying to enter the street even if there is congestion and that adds more trouble.”
“People are to be blamed solely for this and they need to respect the rule at any time of the day,” he adds.
