Sankar Muthusamy

Chennai: Mugappair’s own Sankar Muthusamy has emerged one of the highest paid players during the auctions of Tamilnadu Badminton Super League.

Chennaiites have a chance to witness our local hero in action and cheer for him as the league will be hosted by Fireball Badminton Academy in Mugappair East from 3 to 9 June. The event is organised by the Tamilnadu Badminton Association.

News Today had featured 15-year-old Sankar Muthusamy’s inspiring story in October 2018 issue of our paper. Egged on by an encouraging family Sankar had won the Badminton Asian Championship and Junior Grandprix in Indonesia that year.

Sankar said, “Today I have been selected as an icon player in the auction for the Tirupur Warriors with a maximum bidding price of Rs 2 lakh.”

Sankar had said to us that he sweats it out for a whopping eight hours daily in training. He says, “I do fitness training from 7 am to 9.30 am followed by on-court sessions from 11.30 am to 2 pm. After a short break, I train again from 6.30 pm to 9.30 pm.”

“To win at the international level, you have to perform consistently. To perform consistently this kind of training is necessary,” said Sankar. He adds that his secret to badminton success is his ability to duel his opponents to submission. “My rallying ability is my strength.”

Sankar credits his father Subramanian and his coach Aravindan from Fireball Badminton Academy for his rapid rise in badminton.

“From the very beginning, I have been receiving personal attention from my coach. As I practice in a private academy, sponsorship are also hard to come by. But my father never hesitates to step in monetarily and take me to attend the international tournaments,” he says.

In total, eight teams are participating in TBSL – Chennai Flying Gravity, Tiruvallur Titans, Trichy Blasters, Marina Super Kings, Tirupur Warriors, Karur Smashers, Kovai Knockers and Kanchispark Aces. The eight teams will be divided into two groups. Each team will play all other teams in their respective group once and the top two teams from each group will qualify for the semis.
