Chennai: Amidst all the din in the suburb, a group of eight youngsters engages in cultivation of crops ranging from spinach, ragi, paddy to groundnut at Tambaram.
The youngsters, working in different firms in Chennai, take time during the weekends to come together and do farming.
“More than a part-time job, we consider this a hobby,” says Madhi of Ainthinai group that inspires youngsters to take up agriculture.
The youngsters say it all started during a trip to Vanagam Ecological Foundation, Tiruchi, which conducts training session on organic farming. Inspired by the session, Madhi and his friends decided to take up farming to escape from the humdrum of urban life.
They also say that they have three cows to get organic manure like cow dung and jeevamirtham.
Madhi talks about how they are doing all this for a social cause. “We wanted to do something good for the environment and gain knowledge about farming. Even if we don’t get profit from this, it won’t matter to us.”
The youngsters, once they learn about the nuances of agriculture, plan to conduct workshops for children about the different types of seeds and farming methods. The group firmly believes that the future generation should be taught about farming so they can lead a healthy life.
