Chennai: The junction between Golden George Rathnam Salai, Mugappair Estate Road and Madha Kovil Road is being reconstructed to connect an underground canal with another canal, beneath the Nolambur bridge.

The half constructed road, now, has become an accident prone zone, as two-wheelers and heavy vehicles use the steep and narrow stretch which can be used only by two-wheelers.

“The road was blocked from January to connect the two canals and from April, temporary arrangements were made for two-wheelers to access the road. Eventually cars, autos and trucks started using this narrow and steep road. Everyday, minor accidents take place at this junction. In the busy hours, the road will be jampacked with vehicles, leaving no space for pedestrians to walk. We neither have proper roads nor footpath. Sadly, a police officer also met with an accident in the junction,” said a shopkeeper, on condition of anonymity.

A florist, near the Sai Baba temple said that, students from a private college nearby, overspeed in the stretch, causing most of the accidents.

“The muddy road has been raised two feet from the existing level for the canal to pass underground and now it is too risky to drive on this road. We are wondering when will the whole stretch be levelled,” said Sadagopan, a member of Golden George Nagar Residents’ Welfare Association.

Ithihaas, another resident said, “This is the shortest route that connects Madha Kovil Road and other residential areas to the main road. And now, since half of the road is blocked, it has become way too narrow. There is too much traffic and pollution since they started reconstructing this junction.”
