Chennai: At the age of 10, G Jerry Jose, a resident of VGP Selva Nagar, is impressing his family and neighbours with his violin-playing skill. His talent became known when he played ‘Jana Gana Mana’ on the violin for his neighbourhood association programme during Independence Day last year.

Soon, the class four student wowed those around him with ‘Ragupati Raghava…’ and songs from Punnagai Mannan. After that, his musical piece has become a must at all events held in the locality, especially when renowned guests are invited. “It is cute to see the little boy happily playing the instrument,” a neighbour responded when asked about him.

Jerry began learning the instrument just one-and-a-half years ago, but has become a genius with it. He has already received his first grade from Trinity College with distinction, and in July, he would be appearing for the third grade. His parents – Sheela and Dani – although aware of his talent, don’t let him participate in smaller competitions. “We are preparing him for Menuhin – a global competition that is to take place next year.”

When News Today asked him why he loves the instrument so much, Jerry replied, “Violin is known as the king of all instruments and I love its melodious sound.”

Paul Lawrence, Jerry’s teacher at Antony Musical Centre, said that the boy has even started teaching the basics of the instrument to other students. “I came here to learn keyboard, but when my teacher introduced me to the violin, I was drawn to it and thus began learning it,” said the genius kid.

When asked how much time he devoted for practicing, his parents said that they do not need to remind him to practise as he himself plays it at home without compulsion.

“We got him enrolled in a music school as we did not want him waste time in front of the TV. For a Christmas event, he performed devotional music for over 45 minutes,” added the proud father. “I can play Trinity pieces, religious ones, rhymes and even that of movies, particularly Ilayaraja,” Jerry beamed.
