Tamilnadu Secretariat

Chennai: The election Model Code of Conduct (MCC), which was in effect for 76 days from 10 March when the 2019 general election schedule was announced, came to an end yesterday.

Following this, government officials who were involved in election duty have returned to their offices from today.

The Election Commission of India had announced that the MCC would be in force till 26 May, Sunday, with the completion of the election procession.

The code comes into play as soon as the EC announces an Assembly election in a State or the Lok Sabha polls. Article 324 of the Constitution gives the Election Commission the power to monitor Central and State governments, all the candidates and political parties.

During the 2019 elections, the commission handled many code violations.
