Chennai: Congress MLA from Lawspet Sivakozhundhu will be elected unopposed as the Speaker of Puducherry Assembly tomorrow.
A release from the Secretary to the Assembly, A Vincent Rayar, on Saturday said Lt Governor Kiran Bedi has convened a meeting of the Assembly at 9.30 am on 3 June and has scheduled the election of Speaker the same day.
It also said necessary intimation has been sent to all the MLAs, including the three nominated legislators. The post of Speaker has been lying vacant after V Vaithilingam (Congress) resigned on 21 March to contest the Lok Sabha poll here. Vaithilingam won the election, but has not quit the post of MLA so far, official sources said.
Presently, Deputy Speaker V P Sivakozhundhu is the officiating Speaker. Since no one other Sivakozhundhu had filed papers for Speaker’s election, he is expected to be elected unopposed tomorrow.
Meanwhile, AIADMK legislature party leader A Anbazhagan termed the holding of election for the Assembly Speaker’s post as a murder of democracy.
The legislators should be intimated about the election of the Speaker 14 days prior to the election and due time should also be allowed for those who wish to contest the election to file their nominations.
