Chennai: For the past several weeks, residents at Trustpuram and Choolaimedu, have been complaining about increasing encroachment by street vendors, damaged barricades, eateries and illegal car parking at major roads. It is impossible to find a free pavement during peak hours, they claim.

According to sources, visitors to the shops at Arcot Road, are provided with no parking facilities. This coupled with poor regulations and dense canopy of trees, encourage people to place their vehicles on the lanes of Trustpuram.

“It is annoying to drive on these stretches,” says Harinii Lakshman, a resident of Kodambakkam.
“The pedestrians don’t have a place to walk, which in turn affects the motorists, as the road gets jammed,” she adds.

In addition to this, it has also become a usual sight to see non-functional vehicles on the streets of Choolaimedu, particularly Choolaimedu High Road, which is a vital stretch frequented by those riding from Kodambakkam and T Nagar to Nungambakkam.

“Lack of adequate patrolling by the police force has led to the abandonment of such damaged vehicles on the road,” says Sekaran, a resident, adding, “One can even see rusted barricades lying on the pavements.”

Speaking on this, a traffic police official at Nungambakkam, says, “Necessary action will be taken at the earliest and the roads will be cleared of all kinds of clutter.”
