Chennai: Good news are ahead for residents as the civic body is redesigning arterial streets in Kodambakkam zone in Chennai where the neighbourhood is part of it.

According to reports, the Corporation is getting international and national level architects and consultants to redesign about 150 km roads in Kodambakkam, Teynampet and Adyar zones. It has also been decided to break the project into smaller packages and give the contracts on QCBS (quality-cum-cost-based solution).

The civic body had launched its non motorised transport policy in 2013 and has redesigned about 1,000 km of city. Now it plans to scale up the policy by launching separate project to create a city-wide network for walking and cycling.

It may be noted that civic body took up the cycle track project at K K Nagar which turned into an utter failure, only paving way for motorists to park their vehicles.

The 3.8 km cycle track covered P T Rajan Salai, Ramaswamy Salai and Lakshmanaswamy Salai. Over Rs 3 crore was spent for the project. The civic body just widened one part of the pavement for cycle track and laid red colour cement. No sooner, it became a place for parking and pedestrians were made to walk on the road.

The residents at K K Nagar feel that feasibility study should be taken or they would break the existing structures wasting money.

The civic body should implement strict action against those parking vehicles on cycle tracks and with traffic police, they can implement one-way traffic on Ramasamy Salai and Lakshmanasamy Salai, the people in the neighbourhood felt.

The traffic police had introduced one-way traffic. But due to lack of manpower, they could not maintain it. Also, many residents complained that they have to travel long distance to reach their places due to one-way traffic.

The residents feel that the civic body should arrange a meeting with them, take their views and go ahead on redesigning the roads.
